The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including the French president charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
