Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under house arrest.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a armed takeover in the ninth month and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he was staying under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after fresh information were revealed.

This involved attempting to break his tracking device and a summons to a demonstration that could enable a possible escape.

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's plan to remove the surveillance device to ensure success in his getaway".

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a assembly of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or observe everything from your phone there on your settee? I urge you to battle with us."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to fulfill his full incarceration period under home confinement, with tracking devices.

They also requested that he be allowed to leave his home for medical treatment, saying he needed frequent medical attention for lung conditions and other ailments.

Details of Guilty Verdict

He was found guilty of leading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it couldn't obtain the backing of the armed forces officials. His successor was took office without incident on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on 8 January, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters attacked and damaged official structures in the federal district, the capital city.

The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were detained.

The judges found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the moment, his attorneys called the decades-long sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The former president called the legal proceedings a "witch hunt and said it was designed to prevent him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
